Mary Jane Watson grows up next door to Peter Parker in Queens and becomes an aspiring actress long before she learns what he's become. She finds out Peter is Spider-Man over the course of their relationship, is repeatedly used as leverage against him -- by the Green Goblin, by Doctor Octopus, by Harry Osborn's Sandman-and-Venom scheme -- and leaves her engagement to astronaut John Jameson at the altar for him. Their relationship survives Peter's brief fall into the black symbiote suit, which turns him arrogant and vindictive before he tears it off; by the end of the trilogy, after Harry's death and Venom's defeat, they're together again.
