Ben Parker raises his orphaned nephew Peter alongside his wife May, and it's his line -- that with great power must also come great responsibility -- that becomes the principle Peter builds his life around. He's shot and killed by a carjacker outside their home, on a night when Peter, having just discovered his powers, let a fleeing robber run past him rather than stop him. Ben never learns his nephew had powers at all; Peter carries the guilt of his death into every fight he picks afterward.
